History
A company that evolves with each generation…
Saramac specializes in the fabrication of non-prestressed architectural and structural elements of precast concrete. Based in Terrebonne, north of Montreal, the company was founded over 30 years ago by Marcel Croteau, President and CEO.
Saramac Inc. is the fruit of a long tradition going back half a century. The story begins with A. Croteau et Fils, a building firm founded in 1942 by Armand Croteau. In the 1950s this family business was one of the largest of its kind in the Montreal area, with over 225 employees. In 1965 Marcel Croteau, the founder’s son, took over A. Croteau et Fils. Marcel continued to develop the business, quickly realizing the tremendous potential of precast concrete for designers, builders and construction professionals: a wide range of products enabling the swift completion of facing work on buildings.
A specialist in concrete and bricklaying, Marcel Croteau had a deep understanding of the problems and limitations of this method of construction, particularly in terms of deadlines and weather conditions. When fabricated under rigorous standards, in-plant precast concrete could eliminate these challenges, and pave the way to new approaches. Between 1970 and 1975, Marcel Croteau developed the concept of prefabrication based on masonry elements, i.e. preassembling brick panels using a finished product (bricks) and a polymer-based mortar called Sarabound. Hence the origin of the name Saramac: SARA for the polymer mortar, MAC for the French word for masonry, “maçonnerie”.
This change of direction for A. Croteau et Fils led to the founding of Saramac in 1977, in Lachenaie (Quebec, Canada). The new company immediately drew notice for its brick panels, a brand new idea at the time. A few years later, Saramac was focusing on architectural precast concrete, and success came quickly. Saramac’s products are primarily used for exterior facing on a wide range of commercial, industrial, institutional and residential buildings. From the beginning, both management and staff have constantly reinvested in modernizing the production unit. That says a lot about Saramac’s eagerness to be a leader in the concrete industry. To date, the company has received numerous awards from the concrete industry, notably from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). Saramac enjoys a solid reputation based on the quality of its product, its ability to meet deadlines and its exceptional customer service.
Over the years, Saramac’s renown has grown steadily with its work on over 1500 projects. Buildings with the Saramac touch can be found throughout Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and the New England and Mid-Atlantic states of the US. The company works closely with developers, professionals and trade organizations to meet the needs of its clients.
From bricklaying with Armand Croteau in 1942, to precasting with Marcel Croteau in 1977, Saramac embodies almost 60 years of activity in the construction industry. This family business can be proud of its constant evolution.
Complementing its modern industrial facilities of over 1.5 million square feet located north of Montreal, Saramac serves its international clientele with two service centres in Ottawa and New York.
Through the vision of its founder and a commitment to excellence among all its employees, Saramac has become a leader in its field. Its long tradition of expertise in this unique architectural material is a guarantee of truly fine work... and complete customer satisfaction.
